While tabs are convenient, they contain:
- Cyanuric Acid (CYA/Stabilizer) — protects chlorine from the sun
- Very low pH levels (around 2-3) — extremely acidic
Over time, excessive tablet use can:
- Raise stabilizer levels too high
- Make chlorine less effective
- Lead to algae growth even when chlorine tests “normal”
- Slowly lower pH and damage surfaces/equipment

what is lsi?
Most pool owners only focus on chlorine — but true water balance goes much deeper. The Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) is a formula used to determine whether your water is aggressive, properly balanced, or scale-forming. It takes into account pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, temperature, and stabilizer levels to measure how your water will react with your pool and equipment.
When water is too aggressive, it can slowly pull calcium from plaster, grout, stone, and equipment surfaces, leading to etching, corrosion, damaged heaters, worn seals, and shortened equipment life. When water is scale-forming, calcium deposits can build up on tile lines, salt cells, heaters, and plumbing — reducing efficiency and causing expensive problems over time.
Many pool issues happen slowly and silently long before a homeowner notices them. Cloudy water, scaling, surface damage, poor chlorine performance, and equipment wear can all be signs of improper water balance.
